A well business website design that is built and marketed professionally is sure to bring in many leads and sales. If done badly, your website may receive little to zero traffic and nobody will see it. Below we discuss the biggest design mistakes you must avoid when having your website built.

1. Use of poor title tags. When a website is built, you must use appropriate title tags to describe the page. You should also include some of the target keywords that people might search for This also allows search engines to index and crawl the pages more easily.

2. Putting lots of ads on your webpage. Don\’t do this as it will not only alienate your visitors, but also distract them, prompting them to leave the website. Keep ads and flashing banners to a minimum and your customers will focus on the important parts of the page.

3. Don\’t use complicated website navigation. Most websites put the buttons on the right, left or top of the page. Main navigation pages such as the contact us, about us, faq, home page, etc. are normally best on either the left or top of the page. Don\’t try and impress visitors with whizzing-out menus. Keep it simple and your customers will stay on your site longer.

4. Pages with dead links. It can be very frustrating when you click a webpage link and it doesn\’t work. Make sure you check that all your links are working and point to the right place. Remember that having dead links on a page can get you penalised in the search engines.

5. Using Flash on your website. Flash does have a place on computer gaming sites, but consider using animated GIF\’s instead. Only use Flash when there is no other option, as visitors will have to have flash already installed in their browser to be able to view flash elements. The worst thing you could do is to design your website navigation in flash, which is surprisingly common – and stops your visitors from being able to get around the website. Also consider using javascript or java as an alternative to make your site more \”interactive\”.

6. A lack of a search box on a website. Large websites have many webpages. Adding a search box facility allows these to be searched effectively and quickly.

7. Using PDF file links on the website. Using PDF files can good in the case of putting your glossy company brochure online, but it is better to ideally put the pages in HTML web format. More people will see the information then, as if site visitors don\’t have Adobe Reader installed, they will have to install it. In our experience, people usually click away instead of trying to download it. Keep the use of PDF\’s to a minimum.

8. Visited text links do not change colour. Most web surfers are used to a link they have already clicked on changing colour once they have visited it. Keep link colours familiar to visitors and make sure they change colour once they have already clicked them. Put your reader\’s interest in mind when designing your website.

9. Messy text formatting. Break the website text up into nicely formatted paragraphs, seperated and spiced up with the occasional picture. Too much text blocked together makes visitors \”switch off\” and close a website if they see too much. Keep your site consistent and clear . Consider using bulleted lists, headings, highlighted words, quotes, and subtitles.

10. Use a good-sized font. Using small fonts can make pages difficult to read. In many cases these days, blind people are also now reading web pages with screen readers, but also those with poor vision. Make sure your website is W3C compliant so that the latest screen reading technology can \’read\’ them.

Should I Use a New Window or the Same Window for Opening an External Link?

There has been a controversy raging for quite some time between people who say all external links must open in a new window, and others who say the links should use the same window. I say that this controversy is spurious.

The “controversy”:

Commonly, those people who want to have a new window opening are the people who own the website. And arguing against that position are the web designers who want to maintain strict web standards.

Why do website owners want to use a new window? They’re afraid of losing their viewers. If the link uses the same window, then the viewer is no longer on the owner’s site. In actual fact, I know of no study that has been done to show the percentage of users who don’t come back, but site owners are hard to convince when they feel their livelihood may be at stake.

Web designers are often against using a new window since the W3C, which attempts to set web standards, has declared that the target attribute used to open a new window is no longer allowed.

In addition to this argument, the web designer usually points out that the viewer has two ways of dealing with an off-site link. He can choose to just click it, with the idea of using his BACK button to return to the original website. Or he can right-click the link and choose “Open in a New Window”.

Why there should NOT be a “controversy”:

The target attribute was deprecated by the W3C because HTML – the language the consortium is concerned with – is not supposed to deal with anything but WHAT appears in the browser window. Other things like HOW the content is shown, and WHERE it is shown are the province of other systems.

HOW the information is shown is dictated by CSS. Interactions between the viewer and the browser are governed by the DOM. So consequently, opening a new window should be done by scripting.

This is why there should be no controversy. If the site owner wants offsite links to open in a new window, then the web designer can do so by using scripting. This will not violate the “strictness” of the W3C, and the webpage will validate. See the paragraph below for an easy way of accomplishing this.

Cheaponsale.com Reports Chipmaker SMIC’s Founder-CEO Chang Steps Down

China’s largest contract chipmaker, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC), said yesterday that its long-serving CEO has stepped down, in a bid to restructure the company that had posted losses over the past two years.

Richard Chang, the company’s founder, will leave the firm to pursue other interests, according to a statement from SMIC. Chang will be replaced by David Wang, a 63-year-old director at Solar Fun Power Holdings.

Chang’s resignation came shortly after the Shanghai-based chip maker said it would pay rival, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), $200 million as part of a deal to settle a long-running legal dispute.

TSMC and SMIC yesterday informed a judge in Oakland, California, that they had settled a case in which TSMC accused SMIC of stealing trade secrets. SMIC also agreed to pay TSMC an undisclosed amount in stock and warrants.

Founded in 2000 by Chang, SMIC is the largest foundry in the mainland and gets significant support from the Chinese government, which has long been trying to build up its high-value-added technology industries.

However, after getting off to a relatively strong start, SMIC has languished over the last few years, as competition with more established rivals such as TSMC and the industry’s second largest player UMC intensified. SMIC recorded 16 quarterly losses over the last 17 quarters.

The company last month reported its third quarter loss widened to $69.3 million as the global recession damped chip demand. Chang said last month that the company was expected to post a full-year profit in 2010 as depreciation costs drop and orders increase.

According to SMIC, Wang is a former executive at Applied Materials, the world’s leading supplier of chipmaking equipment. From 2006 to 2007, Wang headed Huahong NEC, another Chinese chipmaker. Reuters said in a report that the appointment of Wang could pave the way for consolidation in China’s chip sector, citing industry analysts.
