A power sharpener can be the best solution to maintaining your woodworking tools sharp. However, it is not the only solution. Blades can be kept sharp with nothing more than a stone. When it comes to really damaged tool blades that have nicks or chucks missing then using a power sharpener is not only quicker but will be more efficient. You will need to use a grinder on the edge of the blade and reshape it by removing any gashes or chinks.

Grinding machines, how and when to use them:

Woodworking tools are more delicate tools that are not suitable for use on a regular shop grinder. The grinding wheel needs to be changed out with one that is specifically designed for use on woodworking tools. You can’t ensure accurate cuts with woodworking bladed tools if you use a standard grinder wheel on them. Standard wheels were made for sharpening lawn mower blades and the like.

When using a shop grinder, you’ll have a hard time managing the grinding process, because the tool rests of such a grinder are tiny. So if you want to grind woodworking tools, you will have to upgrade the rests.

Choosing between dry grinders and wet grinders

When buying a grinder you’ll find that there are two kinds: the dry grinder and the wet grinder. The regular grinder that is sold in shops, consists of a motor-powered wheel that is attached to the arbor. It will have rests for guiding whatever is being ground on the spinning grinding stone. The wheel on a dry grinder can be eight inches wide, or even larger, and is normally in a vertical position. Smaller grinding wheels can cause mistakes referred to has hollow grinding.

A wet grinder will make your life really easy. Not only will it keep the blades cool, but the water used in the process will remove the sliver split from the grinding stone. Other advantages of this type of grinder are the speed, slower than that of a dry grinder, and the position of the wheel which can also be horizontal, not only vertical.

Wet grinders are submerged in a container partially filled with water, providing thus a constant water-flow during grinding. As far as dimensions go, in the case of wet grinders, the bigger, the better.

Be it dry or wet, a grinder isn’t perfect

For the dry grinder the biggest drawback is that the edge of the tool being ground tends to overheat and when this happens it loses temper, or its strength. Another thing that happens is the residue of the grinding material can create a glaze on the blade and it will make the tool less useful. The solution to this problem would be the polishing of the blade with a dressing tool. When it comes to wet grinders, one of the major problems is the dripping of the water onto the wheel during grinding. The water tank is generally positioned on top of the machine. What is most likely to make you choose one type of grinder over the other, is the cost.
