A Brief Summary Of Jamaican And American City Music
October 11, 2011 by Rashad Brown

Jamaican toasting and American rap music have four massive similarities. They both depend on pre-recorded music, each need a heavy beat to enable the rapping or toasting, and their vocals are timed towards the beat of the music. Rap music uses hard funk beats although toasting uses Jamaican music.
The last main similarity may be the content of the lyrics of the toasting or rapping. Accordingly, you will find diverse sorts of raps and toasts. As an example, you will find message raps/toasts, party raps/toasts and so on. You will find extremely many famous rap toasters such Duke Reid and Prince Buster.
Clive Campbell was a Jamaican who immigrated to the Bronx, New York. He brought with him his experiences of the Jamaican mobile discos referred to as ‘sound systems’ along with the toasting approach. Within the Bronx he would acquire the stage name of KoolHerc.
Campbell received the nickname Hercules even though he was attending Alfred E. Smith High School in 1970 by a friend. His friend named him Hercules because of his physique. Clive was into weight lifting. Clive didn’t like the name Hercules so he shortened it to Herc.
Campbell was also a graffiti artist and when he began doing graffiti he produced his graffiti signature, ‘KoolHerc’ derived from his nickname Herc. He began DJ’ing in the early seventies and got himself a huge sound system as he wanted to have a massive audience who could all hear the beat.
KoolHerc seldom played an whole song. He knew which part of the record sent his audience into a frenzy. It was generally a 30 second “break” section in which the drums, bass, and rhythm guitar stripped the beat to its barest essence.
Herc would buy two copies of exactly the same record and play it over and over emphasizing the break section. Herc utilised two turntables to accomplish this feat. This approach became referred to as “beats” or “break-beats”.
Like with graffiti, in DJ’ing style is essential, and must be copied if it’s good enough. What set KoolHerc apart from his colleagues was that he did not wear headphones to identify the breaks. DJ’s who copied him would have to wear headphones.
As using the onset of Jamaican ‘toasting’, KoolHerc also employed basic phrases to encourage his dancers. But as the mixing inside the “breaks” in between the two turntables required much more concentration, Herc became the very first DJ to create MC-Dance team. (While KoolHerc performed at a club named the Hevalo, dancers to his music became called ‘break dancers’) You can find many other DJs that made contributions to American rap music that need to be noted of whom my students could not be conscious.
