I wonder what the best seating choice is when out angling? I presently have, as I discovered when I brought my fishing tackle down from the garage shelf the other day, a small collapsible stool which is somewhat elderly and I fear will struggle to support me for very long. Partly due to metal fatigue but more to do with the situation that there is a bit more of me than there was the last time I sat next to the water.

I have always hankered after a large fishing tackle box that doubles up as a seat just because by definition it is so useful. However, during poor conditions I would think they will tend to form pools which you really wouldn’t want to sit on without waterproof trousers. Also, for their height, they could make rather excellent footstools, so some sort of nice folding garden chair could be the solution. And it will also be better than the previous 2 options as it will have a back to it.

So, if the garden chair is the ideal selection, what kind? A lot of of the requirement for angling is that, once you get into a fish, it is necessary to be standing up, and if it’s a tench or some other sizable species, it is likely to fight and could take some time to land, and so again, if it’s raining then the cushion could easily get drenched and the likelihood of haemorrhoids becomes a factor. So perhaps a slatted seat might be the pick, however not plastic as that may be uncomfortable in cold conditions.

I have seen a type of camp beds for angling, but I can’t picture any angling trip I go on is going to require anything like that, although a little tent as an alternative to an umbrella could be a fantastic addition to the fishing tackle, but in all of this is the concern that everything has to be carried to the peg which could conceivably be quite a way, and it would be preferable to be able to get it all there in one trip rather than a relay.

Keeping that in mind, we must now consider that we have a large fishing tackle box to double as a footstool over one shoulder, I have a rod case over another shoulder which will also be bearing some kind of garden chair, a keep net and landing net in one hand which will only leave 1 hand available to carry something like a a flask, or bait if there isn’t space in the box.

But as long as the day’s fishing is pleasant, it will all be worthwhile. And even if the fish aren’t necessarily feeding, if it’s a nice day then a little self time with nothing to do other than contemplate anything that comes to mind can be thought of as a good day’s angling. It’s pretty hard to do that with a cold, wet botty.

Carp Fishing – Basic Equipment Needed

It often seems like carp fishing comes with a lot of equipment, which can be a little daunting if you’re just starting out. Once you know the basics, however, it’s all quite simple. Read on for some tips. When you’re starting out, you may be tempted to buy the cheapest equipment available, but it’s worth spending a bit more money to get quality products you’ll also be able to use as a more experienced angler. Better quality equipment also means you’ll catch more fish, which is surely the whole point!

The most obvious piece of equipment needed by any angler is a good rod. You only need one, but you may wish to get two or more if you’re serious about carp fishing. If you’re going to catch light carp (under 15lb), then a rod with a test curve of 2lb is ideal. For casting off to longer distances, consider a test curve of 3lb instead. For a rod that’s flexible and powerful, go for a medium action rod, although the kind you’ll need will depend where you’re fishing.

A reel that matches your rod is also an essential item of equipment. A reel with a baitrunner is good as these stop any adventurous carp pulling your rod into the water by alerting you when they bite, giving you time to react and grab the rod. The reel should fit the rod well so you have good balance, although it’s a good idea to test out your chosen rod and reel together to make sure they feel right, as choosing a reel is often a personal thing.

To go with your chosen rod and reel, you need to get some line. For a rod with a 2lb test curve, a 10lb line is ideal. A good rule is to multiply the test curve of the rod by five to work out the type of reel you need. Beginners are recommended to use standard monofilament lines, but this will depend on the reel you buy. Make sure you’re line isn’t too light or you’ll risk losing more carp.

Good hooks are vital for carp fishing as these are what attract the fish. It’s worth spending a bit of money here to get good ones in a range of sizes – from 12 to 4 – as, if you get cheap ones, they often bend, break and aren’t very sharp, which prevents them from hooking onto the fish. Also buy yourself some 1-3oz weights to help sink the hooks and guide the trajectory when you throw the line. After this, all you need is a bag to carry it in.
