Where Did The Martial Arts Originate?

[I:http://olimpiaclub.info/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/AlCase3.jpg] I was working in a plastics factory a few decades ago, and word got around that I was training in the martial arts. A Philippine co-worker came up to me one lunchtime, and he said, “You no study martial arts, martial Arts bad…bad, ” then he shook his head and walked away. From this odd incident I ultimately realized where the martial arts originated.
As one might expect, I was quite surprised by my co-workers viewpoint, the Philippines were famous for their martial arts, and so I tracked him down and queried him further. “Why do you think the martial arts are so bad?” I asked. This is the anecdote he told me.
“One day I decide I need know martial arts, so I go outside and hit tree. I chop like so (he did a downward chop, as if hammering down on somebody’s forehead), and a I chop and I chop. I do this karate two hour a day for two year.
“One weekend my neighbor have crazy, wild party, and three in morning I go ask him to stop music. He just laugh, so I chop him. I chop his face and he turn upside down, so I tun home and worry I kill him…that why Karate so bad!”
I didn’t l reveal my grin, because he was serious, he really thought that karate was bad, and didn’t understand that his bizarre method of training, and his own lack of control, might have something to do with the art ‘being bad.’ But his story led me to wonder where and how the martial arts had been invented. I mean, the fighting disciplines are as old as the world’s second oldest profession, so how did they come about?
They came into being because somebody wanted to take something away from somebody, and they came from somebody wanting to stop somebody from taking something away from him. This is the same as lawyerism, but applied to the actual hit and punch that occurs when politics breaks down. Eventually, the idea of taking something away from somebody, or protecting your property from somebody reached the levels of armies and weapons of mass destruction.
The idea that what you own belongs to me, and I don’t have to pay you no stinkin’ money…that is why the combat disciplines were invented. And people go to war, and steal dollars and real estate and wives and whatever else they think can get away with. And, oddly, as my previous words gave hint, the solution to this immorality and degradation of art is…in the study of the true art.
You practice the art to be able to protect yourself, and in that practice you discover the truth of yourself…you realize your self worth, and the idea that you are honorable and suddenly you don’t have to fear others, or that they might take from you. On the day that every person on earth practices the martial arts immorality and war stop, and on that day everybody will know why the martial arts were invented. They come from inside, from the spirit within, from the honor that pulses with every beat of your heart and every breath you expel.

Beginners Jiu Jitsu: Defend Your Guard At All Cost!
October 8, 2010 by Chris Edwardo
There are a lot of suggestions out there telling you how to defend your guard. Some of these are: do not allow the other fighter to get a hold of your knees, find an angle, or drive your legs to the ground. However, there is one suggestion that I often see novices failing to do. Head control is critical in retaining guard.
You see, as an opponent passes their head will generally go to one side and they will move their hips to the same side to reach side control. If they are smart they will control your legs and/or hips to prevent you from hip escaping away. But if you properly control their advance you can totally prevent the pass.
As your opponent starts passing to the right, push his head in that same direction. That will both create a large amount of space between you but also not allow him to progress into side control. You don’t have to be rough and go MMA on him, but you can be firm with a palm to the cheek or a forearm to the neck.
As you push on his head, shrimp out in the opposite direction hard. You’ll use your hips and legs way more than your arms; pushing his head is more about controlling his position to allow you to escape. After you’ve achieved enough distance, re-center yourself and put him back in your guard. Depending on his progress and control over your hips/legs, you may need to hip escape more than once. Just be ready for whatever happens and adjust.
Keep in mind that mastering these jiu jitsu moves is going to require practice. You will need to be patient so when the time comes you will be able to use them. Keep practicing, master them, and you’ll have another weapon as you progress in your BJJ training.

Beginner Jiu Jitsu Tip: You Can Survive!
October 8, 2010 by Chris Edwardo
When starting your jiu jitsu training, the vast array of techniques and positional situations you have to process is huge. You will constantly be put in bad positions by your classmates and you will be stuck and unable to get out. Of course this eventually leads to submission.
Don’t get discouraged, because you can survive!
A great aspect of jiu jitsu is that it is a super equalizer. The strong or speedy may likely lose against a trained jiu jitsu practitioner. The key is lasting long enough in your training to become skilled.
In a word, basics. If you become a master at just the jiu jitsu basics, you can generally prevent yourself from getting in bad positions and are able to handle yourself if you happen to end up in one. Practice these at home by yourself, and keep them in mind during your classroom training to apply them there as well. After a few weeks you’ll have a basic skill level that’ll really allow you to focus on learning and applying your techniques instead of a panicked defense.
What are these basics?
Hip Escapes
On the technique side, this is the grand daddy of jiu jitsu basics. During training you should always have “loose hips”. Being able to transition from side to side and use your hips for generating leverage is critical. This cannot be said enough times. Being able to hip escape (aka shrimping) is important in creating space between you and your opponent for defense and attacks.
Breathing
Another basic you need to get down is breathing. If you tire out in training or a real life fight, you’re dead. You CAN relax and you need to slow down and breathe while you work your game. If rolling/sparring becomes a sprint for you, you’ll be done in 30 seconds. In a typical 5-7 minute training round, that would be miserable! So slow down, take your time, breathe deeply, and relax.
Open Mind
Many students come to jiu jitsu thinking that their strength is going to beat all challengers they face. This type of person is typically brutally proven wrong by some featherweight with a bit of training. To accelerate your learning, open your mind to the new ideas this art presents. Work the techniques with proper form and without using strength. Understand that you are going to have a learning curve and realize that this is a journey that you can’t just power through.
Ego
Most jiu jitsu students are male and as such have sizable egos. Check your ego at the door. Embrace the long journey of learning BJJ and learning all it has to offer. If you are the guy that doesn’t tap, you will end up frequently injured. And if you are injured, you won’t be able to train. Embrace losing just as much as winning. Help your classmates improve their skills. Become a family!
The basics above are by no means a complete list of everything you need to master. But they are a good start for your journey. Walk into class eager to learn, help your classmates, and train hard. This is an amazing martial art and it will change your life if you let it.

Progressive Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: The Most Common Mental BJJ Mistake
October 8, 2010 by Chris Edwardo
The sport of Jiu Jitsu is both physically and mentally challenging. In fact, many refer to jiu jitsu as physical chess! What is wonderful about this sport is that even if you are physically the best player out there, you can still be beaten by your opponent if he is stronger mentally.
If you go back to the early 90s you can see a great example of this in the UFC fights of Royce Gracie. He was always the smaller and less athletic guy, but he ended up winning UFC 1, 3, and 4. It was amazing and clear that he had skills that other fighters didn’t know what to do with.
So, you might be asking how this applies to you.
The mental game is just as important as the physical. Understand what you are good at and what you need to work on. Know those of your opponent as well. Put together a jiu jitsu plan that’ll let you maximize your strengths and take advantage of his weaknesses. Then, all you have to do is make it happen.
If you are a small and fast guy, don’t play bottom against someone much stronger. If you are heavy, be sure to utilize your weight when playing top. If your best submissions are arm bars, stick to them and make them even better!
Now don’t mistake this tip for making your game one dimensional focusing only on what you are good at. Your jiu jitsu training needs to encompass every component and aspect of the sport that is available in order to completely comprehend your craft. You should be taking these suggestions as a way to pump yourself up regarding your approach to competition and training. If you use your brain you’ll be ahead of half of the other guys out there!
My advice to you is to write down on a piece of paper: what you are good at, what you need to improve on, and the two techniques you intend to develop. Set out to train in the 2 areas you want to develop. Once you finish your training session, determine what your weaknesses and strengths are. After you get these on paper, you will be more apt to follow through, but you’ll need to be accountable to yourself for perfecting them.
